Cowles-Sheffield family papers, 1799-1885.

Correspondence, primarily between Thomas Cowles and his second wife, Elizabeth Sheffield Cowles. There are also letters between Cowles and his first wife, Julia, and his sister Julia Crosby. Some of the letters were written while Cowles was in Ohio, 1839-1842. Other correspondents include George Sheffield (father of Elizabeth) to his son Edward, and E.S. Cowles to son William S. Cowles. Elizabeth Cowles wrote a journal for her children that may be found in the collection, as well as later letters regarding real estate in Ohio formerly owned by the Cowles and Sheffields. Also includes inventories of the estates of Timothy and Catharine Cowles of Farmington, Connecticut, along with accounts kept by the executor, Chauncey D. Cowles. Additionally includes distribution of Catharine's estate.
